This breakfast pizza recipe is based on the one I grew up with: All kinds of tasty breakfast toppings, on a base of my grandmother’s baking powder biscuits recipe!

Today I’m sharing my recipe for a favorite breakfast food: Pizza.
There are many ways to make homemade breakfast pizza. Some will use regular pizza crust - either from the grocery store, or homemade pizza dough, while other easy recipes use crescent rolls dough as the base.
This easy breakfast pizza recipe is based on the one I grew up with, which was a bit of a bastardization of my grandmother's Baking Powder Biscuits recipe.
Using this base recipe - which is highly customizable - can give you many delicious ways to serve pizza for breakfast... Kind of complex tasting and definitely a hearty breakfast, but relatively easy to make. Great way to start a weekend!
The last pizza I made was beautiful, delicious, and hit the spot, so I posted a teaser photo to Facebook... and promptly forgot about my promise to post the recipe soon. WHOOPS!
Was reminded of it the other day, so here we go!
The Original Breakfast Pizza
Growing up - and into my mid-twenties - the original recipe for my breakfast pizza was a bit more simple than the recipe I’m sharing here.
Here’s a very old photo of the OG Breakfast Pizza:
In this original version, the crust had some oregano, cheese and crumbled bacon in it.
It was rolled out, topped with garlic salt, tomato slices, and more crumbled bacon, before being covered in cheese and baked.
Fairly basic - barely more than a cheese breakfast pizza - but super tasty!
The areas right under the tomato slices would soak up a bit of the juice while baking, giving a nice bit of extra flavour punch to the dough in those areas.
The Updated - and Upgraded! - Recipe
We went for a more ornate pizza this time, and it did not disappoint!
I think part of what got me craving pizza was the mushrooms, because there was definitely a drive to put a ton of mushrooms on this. SO good!
Anyway ...
The actual recipe card mentions the toppings that we had on hand that morning, but feel free to add whatever you'd like.
Tomato and onion slices would work well, as an example. So would ribbons of fresh basil.. yum!
Have some fun with it, and enjoy!
Breakfast Pizza Ingredients
The crust of this pizza contains really basic ingredients, and the toppings leave a lot of room for customization.
Biscuit Crust
* All-Purpose Flour
* Baking Powder
* Salt
* Dried Oregano (Basil and/or garlic powder are also great in this!)
* Shortening (You can use lard or butter, if you prefer)
*Milk (Buttermilk or dairy-free milk options also work)
Topping Ideas
What pizza toppings you use is very much a matter of what you’re in the mood for, and what you have on hand.
All meats should be cooked before putting them on the pizza.
A few ideas:
Bacon - Regular pork bacon, chicken bacon, turkey bacon, or veggie bacon options are all fine.
Breakfast Sausage - Sliced or crumbled. Italian sausage, pork sausage, turkey sausage, veggie sausage crumbles all work well.
Cheese - I usually use cheddar cheese or Monterey Jack, but mozzarella cheese, Provolone, or a mix all work great! A bit of Parmesan is always nice.
Eggs - Scrambled eggs before adding, or cracked on top to bake (like a fried sunny side up egg) both work! If scrambling, you can use just egg whites if egg yolks aren’t your thing. If cracking on top, wait until 5 minutes or so before the end of the cook time, if you’d like runny yolk.
Bell peppers: Red peppers and/or green peppers are awesome in this. Sliced or chopped.
Mushrooms - Sliced or chopped
Onions - Red onions, white, or green... sliced or chopped. I like to save green onions for the end, just before serving. Caramelized onion is also fantastic.
Sauce - While I usually make this without pizza sauce, you can use sausage gravy if you want a creamy sauce. A another option, you can drizzle this with Hollandaise sauce after it comes out of the oven, if you like.
Note: I’ll usually add some of the crumbled crispy bacon - and sometimes some shredded cheese - into the biscuit crust, just before adding the milk
Garnish After Baking
A few ideas for flavours you can add after baking:
Basil - dried or fresh
Hot Sauce - I usually leave this up to each person to do their own serving.
Oregano - usually dried
Red Pepper Flakes
How to Make Breakfast Pizza
The full recipe follows - end of this post - but here’s a pictorial overview:
Pre heat oven to 450 degrees F, line a large baking sheet, pizza pan, or cookie sheet with parchment paper. (You can use a pre-heated pizza stone if you prefer, I don’t usually bother)
Prepare Ingredients
Slice or chop any vegetables you're using, grate the cheese.
Cook slices of bacon to desired doneness - I’ll use a large nonstick skillet for this and the eggs.
Remove the bacon from the pan, reserving drippings - if using actual bacon - for other uses. (May I recommend our “Epic Popcorn?)
Note: We used chicken bacon. If using regular bacon, be sure to use a paper towel to absorb excess fat!
In a small bowl, whisk eggs with a bit of salt and pepper. Add to the hot pan and scramble just until set. Remove from heat and set aside.
In a medium bowl, mix together flour, baking powder, salt, and oregano.
Measure shortening into the same bowl, and cut into the dry ingredients using a pastry cutter or fork(s). The idea is to work it in until it’s evenly distributed throughout, in very small pieces.
Add a handful or two of the bacon, stir gently to distribute. Pour in the milk, stir until dough comes together. Don’t over stir or beat it.
Using your prepared baking sheet as a work surface, spread dough out, forming a crust that is of even thickness – between ½″ – ¾″ thick.
Scatter cheese over the entire pizza.
Evenly distribute scrambled egg over the crust, and top with mushrooms, green peppers, and remaining bacon (use whatever amounts of each that you like).
Bake for 15-20 mins, or until dough is cooked through.
Serve hot!
Tips For Making This Recipe
- If using chicken or turkey bacon, I like to cook it slowly over low to medium heat. I like the texture best when I let the heat dry it out a bit before actually browning it.
- Don’t overhandle the dough. Much like with biscuits, you want to mix it just until it comes together, and only handle it enough to get it to ball together / form the crust.
- Cook times will vary based on how thick you formed your crust, and how heavy you went with the toppings. Just keep an eye on it after 15 minutes.
- This is a great weekend breakfast, especially with a bit of orange juice... maybe some fruit salad to round it out!
- If you have leftovers, wrap them in plastic wrap after they come to room temperature. Wrapping warm pizza will make it soggy.
- The next day, you can heat leftovers in the microwave, toaster oven, or air fryer. Time will depend on the power of the appliance used.
- This makes a great snack, any time of the day.
