Looking for a SUPER easy way to serve peaches, that requires almost nothing other than the peaches themselves?
Consider grilling them!
Selecting Your Peaches
While most of my peach recipes require really ripe, usually soft peaches... you’re going to want peaches that are a bit more firm for this. Not necessarily really under-ripe, but definitely not RIPE-ripe, if that makes sense.
Use a freestone peach - these are the varieties of peach that come cleanly off the pit, rather than “clinging” to it - those are “clingstone” peaches, shockingly enough! 🙂
As you’re slicing it in half and taking the pit out, you’re going to want the pit to come out willingly, because otherwise you’re going to have a big mess on your hands, not the simple, elegant dessert you see here!
The Peach Skin
Wash the peaches before using them, for sure... but removing the skin isn’t super necessary. In fact, it can be somewhat detrimental!
For one, the skin will loosen up as it cooks, and you can pull it off just in one easy swoop, once it’s on the plate.
Kind of makes the idea of messing with actually peeling it seem like a waste of time, to be honest.
Secondly, the peach skin gives it a little more grip when you’re cooking it, than you’d have with a skinned peach.
Once that skin comes off - and especially as it heats up and the juices start flowing - those peaches get slippery!
So, we recommend leaving the skin on when you’re preparing, and just pulling it off when serving - if at all.
We usually just leave the skins on for serving. If the peach was a bit too ripe for reasonably grilling, we may not have a choice in the matter, though - sometimes they basically slide off on their own, while being plated. It’s all good.
How to Grill Peaches
Grilled peaches is great as an add-on when you’re already grilling dinner. Personally, I like to do the prep work - washing, halving, and pitting the peaches - before supper.
Grill dinner, turn the heat way down - just enough to keep it warm - and enjoy your meal. Afterwards, turn the grill up to medium heat, and cook your peaches.
Personally, we like to cook them flat / cut side down first, before flipping over and cooking the outside/rounded edge... but really, you could go either way with that.
If you’re looking for a good sear on it, make sure the grill itself is good and hot before putting them cut side down, as you’re not going to want to move it once it’s in place.
Anyway, just spray - or butter - both sides of your peaches before putting them on the grill, and have at it - 6 minutes on one side, six on the other, and you’re good to go.
How to Serve Grilled Peaches
One of the most popular ways to serve grilled peaches is with cinnamon and sugar, but we tend to go in a different direction - honey and citrus, rather than sugar and spice.
I love what honey and lime bring to the peaches, both alone and in combination.
I love how the acidity of the lime complements the sweetness of the grilled peaches, and I love how the honey sort of enhances and carries that lime flavour, as a sauce.
Sometimes we’ll serve it with ice cream - usually Vanilla or French Vanilla - sometimes with whipped cream, sometimes with neither.
Go with whatever you like best!
